Oral history is a technique for generating and preserving original, historically interesting information through personal recollections and interviews. As early as 1913, we have evidence that Hyde Parkers valued the importance of sharing Oral Histories.

Today, we hold events encouraging residents to recount and share stories of their experiences and memories of Hyde Park. We ask questions such as, “Do you remember the Hyde Park Y.M.C.A. or the old Harper Theatre? Did you shop at the Hyde Park Co-op or at Breslauer’s Department Store? Do you remember dining in restaurants in the old Harper Court Shopping Center? Did you or your children participate in sports activities at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club or were involved in after school activities with other community organizations?” We ask residents to revisit the glorious past of their neighborhood by sharing memories and listening to some stories they’ve never heard before through our unique oral history program.
