In the summer of 2022, some students in the Folklore Society began to collect documents located in the Folk Society student office in Ida Noyes in effort to preserve this important history. Working with Special Collections and the Hyde Park Historical Society, the students were able to ensure this important history would be preserved for years to come. Recognizing the importance and impact the Folk Festival has had on the Hyde Park community, and it’s ability to bring a wide range of community members, activists, and all around lovers of folk music, the Hyde Park Historical Society agreed to host students for the summer so they could begin preservation and digitalization efforts. All Digitization for this project has been completed by the UChicago Folk Society members. The students also saw the value oral histories from those with long-term involvement in the Fest—affectionately termed “geezers”— about their time at the Fest and thoughts on its importance. This oral history project is separate from the Hyde Park Historical Society’s Oral History Program- but none the less- we are happy to be a platform for these stories to be heard.
