February Open House: Remembering Bill Walker

The February Open House aimed to highlight the contributions and the legacy of William “Bill” Walker, a pioneering black muralist who left his mark on Hyde Park, the City of Chicago, and countless cities across America. Maria Corpuz, a HPHS volunteer, and proud Hyde Parker, spearheaded this event and volunteered to lead tours down to Walker’s mural at the 56th Street viaduct, “Childhood is without Prejudice”.

The Hyde Park Herald joined one of the tours and wrote an article on the event. Click here to the Herald Article.

We Need Your Help!

Do you know someone who would be great to interview for a documentary that UChicago students are currently working on about Oak Woods Cemetery and the Confederate Mound? Their documentary will explore the history and present state of community relationships to the Confederate Mound.

Do you have photos of or from inside the George F Harding Museum? If so, please send them our way so we can increase the number in our archives! Maybe you were in a camera club and took photos, or maybe you were an Andy Frain Usher and have a story to tell?

Do you have photos or information about the Co-op at 5000 East End? Do you know someone who lived there? Do you have any information about the Jewish community that called the building home? We would love to know and help the 5000 East End Co-op continue to grow their records as they plan for their centennial in the coming years.

If you can help with any of the above, please email 1893@HydeParkHistory.org Thanks for your help!
