Hyde Park Book Club: In Praise of Good Bookstores with Jeff Deutsch

The Hyde Park Book Club hosted this event on Monday, November 21st, 2022, 7:30pm

Author and Local Hyde Parker, Jeff Deutsch joined the Hyde Park Book Club for his discussion of "In Praise of Good Bookstores" on Monday, November 21st. Do we need bookstores in the twenty-first century? If so, what makes a good one? In the well written In Praise of Good Bookstores, Jeff Deutsch—the director of Chicago’s Seminary Co-op Bookstores, one of the finest bookstores in the world—pays tribute to one of our most important and endangered civic institutions. He considers how qualities like space, time, abundance, and community find expression in a good bookstore. Along the way, he also predicts a future in which the bookstore not only endures, but realizes its highest aspirations. Jeff Deutsch is the Director of the Seminary Co-op Bookstores and has been so since 2014. Prior to Seminary, Jeff was at Stanford University where he served as director of stores for the Stanford Bookstore Group. Previously, he led the Cal Student Store at the University of California, Berkeley. Jeff has a long association with the Seminary Co-op having first visited the store as a teenager. The store's atmosphere and extraordinary selection of titles left an indelible mark in his memory. In 2019 Jeff undertook to have the Seminary-Coop become the first not-for-profit bookstore in the country.
