Chicago Motor Coach Company chronicles an era with buses first traversed the city’s boulevards. Streetcars were not allowed on Park District streets, thereby paving the way for motor bus operations.Chicago’s first south side motor coach route, 1Drexel & Hyde park, went into service on April 15, 1923 with a new bus barn at 52nd and Cottage Grove. Four Motor Coach routes served Hyde Park with the last new route, 4 Jeffery, added in 1946. By 1952 the Chicago Motor Coach Company would be purchased by the Chicago Transit Authority.Author Jack Doyle will discuss the history of the company and share his search for photo documentation of this fascinating period of Chicago transportation history.
